Last month I stayed at Villa del Palmar Flamingos to participate in the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations at and nearby the resort.
Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a holiday celebrated throughout Mexico on November 2nd, in which friends and family gather to pray and honor those that have passed away. It is believed that through altars and offerings, the additional support will help the deceased on their spiritual journey in the afterlife.
The day is celebrated by building altars and honoring the deceased with a mixture of their favorite personal items. In honor of tradition, families also leave marigolds, sugar skulls, and the deceased’s once favorite foods and beverages upon the graves of their loved ones throughout the day. In downtown Puerto Vallarta, altars were displayed from October 26th thru November 2nd to allow everyone a week to see the festive creations.
Below are a few photos of what I saw in downtown Puerto Vallarta.
Many of the local resorts built altars to showcase along the malecon honoring people that had a significant impact on their lives.
Altars built by the staff at Villa del Palmar Flamingos were exhibited outside by the pool from October 31st thru November 2nd. The departments had four hours to build their altars during the afternoon on October 31st and interested members and guests helped the teams. The house keeping department won the altar competition this year.
Here is a photo of me helping the Activities Team build their altar.
Here are a few other photos of altars at the resort.
Below are photos of the Mexican Theme Night that occurred on Monday, October 30th, and occurs every Monday night throughout the year, at Villa del Palmar Flamingos.
The resort had festive decorations, special deserts for the celebration, and a live performance showcased in the video clips below.
I highly recommend that you visit Puerto Vallarta during the week of Halloween and Dia de los Muertos so you can experience all the beautiful displays and festive activities.
