Travelers are encouraged to walk, jog, bike, skate, or even segway down the Malecon boardwalk in downtown Puerto Vallarta. Another noteworthy feature along the Malecon are the sculptures that cross your path every few feet. Read along for details about some of the most famous and beautiful bronze sculptures.
“Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla” by José Esteban Ramírez Guareño (1988)
The sculpture depicts a hero that just about every Mexican school child can recognize in the blink of an eye. Miguel Gregorio Antonio Ignacio Hidalgo-Costilla y Gallaga Mandarte Villaseñor, better known as Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla or just plain Miguel Hidalgo, was a Mexican priest and leader of the Mexican War of Independence. His image is now memorialized throughout Mexico and in downtown Puerto Vallarta.
“Millenium” by Mathis Lidice (2001)
This masterfully sculpted piece of protruding artwork is a tribute to evolution, life, time, and human development. The woman reaching out to the wings of the dove at the top of this statue represents the artists’ wish for peace in the future.
“Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton” by Jim Demetro (2015)
This life-size bronze statue is inspired by “Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton,” and it is recognized internationally as one of the most famous sculptures in the world. It’s most frequently called “Los Amantes,” which stands for “The Lovers.” This sculpture is located by the Iguana Restaurant & Tequila Bar on Calle Zaragoza 445 in Gringo Gulch, downtown Puerto Vallarta. This bronze sculpture represents the most recognized lovers of the 1960s, Richard Burton (1925-1984) and Elizabeth Taylor (1932-2011). Burton and Taylor were two actors at the pinnacle of their careers when they met on the scene of a movie and began their love affair. Their publicized affair earned them their infamous title as the most famous couple of their era and inspired the creation of their famous bronze sculpture and dubbed them as “The Lovers”. “Los Amantes” was unveiled during a massive celebration on November 28, 2015. The celebration included a mariachi band playing on the bridge, an illustrious dinner, drinks, and a speech.
“San Pascual Bailon” by Ramiz Barquet (2008)
Standing over 9ft. tall, this sculpture was modeled after “San Pascual Bailon,” also known as the patron saint serves as a prominent fixture in the center of Puerto Vallarta’s restaurant and dining area. Fine-dining and beverages are all extremely important to the Maleocan area and the city because it is used to bring people together and has played a significant role in Puerto Vallarta’s success.
“Triton y Sirena” by Carlos Espina (1990)
The Triton y Sirena sculpture depicts the Greek Mythological God of the sea Poseidon and the mermaid Amphrite. It represents the artists’ reflection of the human understanding of the history of mythology.
Initially, the Malecon ran from Hotel Rosita (by the spiral Millennia sculpture) to the Amphitheater and the Arches by the Naval Museum, right beside the main city square in (el Centro) Downtown Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico.
A few years ago, the Malecon in Puerto Vallarta was expanded. There is now a second section of the Malecon, called “Malecon II,” that stretches from the Arches by the dolphin statue to the Cuale River. The fun continues in this area, and you will find an abundance of activities, live music events, performances, and more.

Panchos Takos (Tacos)
Every day around 5 pm, this famous Puerto Vallarta eatery serves up delicious tacos and Latin inspired dishes. One of their specialty tacos is the al pastor which is a juicy roasted pork treat piled onto a tortilla and topped with pineapple, verde sauce, onion, and cilantro (popularized and brought to Mexico by Lebanese tourists). For those daring enough, be sure to ask for a side of their spicy orange habanero sauce. Pricing for their popular tacos vary, but they are typically under 5.00 USD on average.
Ortensia
Named after the head chef and owner, Ortensia is the perfect place to get an authentic Italian meal. From fresh woodfired pizza, pasta, meatballs, and more. Ortensia has something delicious to offer every guest.
Vitea
The Vitea restaurant serves up robust seafood, ravioli, and European inspired meals. It is an excellent spot for those who want to get away from tacos and quesadillas. It’s also a great place to enjoy wine and beautiful Puerto Vallarta views.

Senor Frogs
For a hip and cool ambiance, meals prepared tableside, delicious drinks, and great music be sure to stop by Senor Frogs. They are open for lunch and dinner and conveniently located on the boardwalk.
Bar Morelos
If you are looking for an upscale lounge-style night club that plays the best in Salsa, Cumbia, Latin, Reggaeton, Hip-hop, and more, then be sure to stop by the Bar Morelos. Dance the night away and allow them to provide you with a unique and exciting experience that you won’t forget.
The Malecon is a 5-minute taxi ride (or a short walk) from Villa del Palmar Puerto Vallarta or a 35-minute taxi ride from Villa del Palmar Flamingos.
