During my last trip to Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto I embarked on the Outback Desert and ATV Tour with Danzante Tours.
For this tour, we met in the lobby to check-in and were given helmets and bandanas to wear. After gearing up, we met with our two tour guides for the afternoon and were led to the ATVs, which were parked out in front of the resort. In total, our group was a small group of eight people. If you are 16 and over you can drive an ATV on your own or you can ride a double ATV, meaning that you will share an ATV with one other person. For children under 16, riding as a passenger on a double ATV is required along with parental consent to participate in this tour.
In front of the resort, the guides walked around and individually showed us how to operate the ATV’s and gave us time to practice with small laps in front of the resort to ensure we were all comfortable driving the ATVs. I appreciated how thorough the guides were in their instructions and how they walked around to all of us to ensure that everyone in our group was comfortable driving prior to departing the resort.
After the training and practice laps, our guides led us through the outback area near the resort. We drove through the Baja Desert and the nearby town Ligui as we saw breath-taking views of the ocean and the beautiful Islands of Loreto. There were moments during this tour where we drove our ATVS on the beach and along the salt estuary, which gave me a different and beautiful perspective of the local area. During the tour, we made a total of five stops to take in the scenery (and of course have time for photos) as well as a water break. The guides brought an ice chest full of waters and sodas, which were included with this tour.
For the last stop, we went to a local family’s house in Ligui Village where we learned and made our own fresh corn tortillas and sampled local coffee. This was my favorite part of the tour (and I did not expect to do something like this on an ATV tour) because we were able to see how the locals live and we learned about their culture. Plus, since we had spent a few hours riding in the desert this was the perfect way to end our afternoon as we had now worked up an appetite.
Below is a photo of Maria, the owner of the home, showing us how to make fresh tortillas.
Throughout the tour, we had one guide in the front, leading our group, and one guide at the very end of the group to ensure that no one got left behind. I really appreciated how our guides on this tour were constantly checking in on everyone to make sure that they were having fun and to see if we had any questions. This tour is a great adventure for all ages as there are three different options for this tour (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) for drivers of all experience levels, which your agent or the Activities Office onsite will ask you upon booking to ensure that you are booking the experience that matches your interests. There are morning and afternoon ATV tours offered twice daily and the tour is approximately four hours long.
I highly recommend that you embark on the Outback Desert and ATV Tour with Danzante Tours during your next vacation to Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto for a once in a lifetime experience!
