As of March 2019, Volaris Airlines began offering a bi-weekly flight service to Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto. Flights depart out of the Tijuana Airport on Tuesday’s and Saturday’s and fly directly to the Islands of Loreto. Volaris Airlines is one of Mexico’s major flight providers, they offer flights throughout the country, and to many international destinations. Now they have rapidly expanded into an affordable and reliable way for travelers to get to Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto. Vacationers can access the airline via the Cross Border Xpress (CBX), which is a terminal in San Diego that allows you to walk safely across the border to the Tijuana Airport.
In the passage below, members Mr. and Mrs. Knight share their experience with using the Volaris Airline service and the Cross Border Xpress (CBX) bridge, and they strongly encourage all travelers to do the same for their trips to Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto!
“One word: Awesome!!! Left Loreto in a shuttle and at the airport by 12:00 pm. Flight left on time at 1:26 pm. Full plane beautiful flight. Landed, grabbed bag, walked past Mexico security, through customs, grabbed a Starbucks, walked to our car on paid for parking at 2:36 pm (time change) we were only a 2 hour to drive home with minimal traffic. Awesome.”
The members continue explaining their travel experience in the brief passage below.
“We joined UVC a decade ago after visiting Villa del Palmar Cabo San Lucas and Villa del Palmar Cancun. We appreciate the property and staff at each of those locations. However, once we saw the vision for the Islands of Loreto, we jumped at the chance to be the first to visit. We are now Five-star Elite members and enjoy the extraordinary benefits of the Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto location.
Typically we would rent a car and stay at an airport hotel to catch an early flight. Then we would end our wonderful vacation with the grind of LAX customs. The return flight would arrive around 4:00 pm during rush hour pick up a rental car and face a five-hour drive to Palm Desert which is 120 miles away.
What an incredible difference it was in April to go through the Cross Border Xpress (CBX) bridge connected to the Tijuana airport on the US side at Otay Mesa. We leisurely drove from Palm Desert over the mountains and spring blooms in the valleys. With time to spare, we were also able to stop for pie and coffee. There are several hotels close by that are reasonable in Otay Mesa such as Days Inn and Holiday Express. We drove to the airport a few miles away to make certain of the route and timing. We checked in to the Holiday Inn and quickly found our comfortable room, ate a snack by the pool, and then we took a walk around the growing industrial area.
The next morning at 7:00 am, it took us approximately 15 minutes to arrive to the airport, and drop me, one bag of hiking and swimming gear to check in. My husband Spencer parked the car close by for $15.00 USD a day, and then he joined me. We proceeded together and walked into the small lobby for Volaris Airlines check-in. Our flight was pre-booked for $80.00 USD round trip. The flight departed on time, at 9:15 am, and the plane ride lasted for an hour and 30 minutes.
There was an ample amount of staff to help us get our boarding passes, pre-booked tickets to cross the bridge, and our commuter visas. After scanning our documents and the passport check, we walked leisurely to the airport entrance; which had an eating area and a Starbucks Coffee Cafe. We then found our boarding gate and waited. We relaxed while watching the flights depart for several locations in Mexico.
After a fabulous week of vacationing in Loreto, we returned to the terminal to catch our short flight out. On the return, we went back through domestic customs, a small US check and scan. Welcome Home. We were amazed to reverse the process and drive home before dark in the HOV lanes in a few hours with minimal traffic.
Give the Cross Border Xpress (CBX) a try. If you fly into San Diego, there is a shuttle available to and from Union Station. The shuttle will pick up and drop off at the airport curb every hour. Volaris is clearly marked to the right side of the entrance. Keep in mind that booking in advance will save you time and allow you the best choice of seating. The airport is expanding with new shops, clean restrooms, and the boarding areas are amazing. Both timetables gave us more time to check in and enjoy the day and leave later for a relaxed checkout at the Islands of Loreto.
We will use the Cross Border Xpress (CBX) for other cities in Mexico, and now getting to the Islands of Loreto, and home again becomes part of our vacation. Yeah, no more LAX!!!”
